Stadium Shakers: More Acts That Could Pack Jones Stadium
Now that George Strait has come and gone, what are the chances lightning strikes a third time?
We’ve seen it happen before. Back in 2009, Bob Dylan, John Mellencamp, and Willie Nelson teamed up to fill Jones Stadium. Then this past weekend, Strait proved once again that West Texas will absolutely show up when the right name rolls through. But here’s the reality—those moments are rare, and they take something special.
Let’s be honest about it: George Strait is an anomaly. His draw in Texas—especially this part of Texas—is on another level. It’s similar to Red Dirt country in that the audience here is deeper, more loyal, and more willing to travel. That kind of built-in regional power is something very few artists have.
On the flip side, most artists capable of pulling 30,000 people have options—and Lubbock usually isn’t at the top of the list. If you’re a major touring act, you’re looking at Dallas, Houston, maybe Austin. Bigger markets, bigger infrastructure, easier routing. Lubbock sits a little too far off that main line, which makes it a tougher sell, even if the fans are here.

Do You Think Realistically Any Of Those Shows Would Come To Lubbock?
And that’s where the gap really shows. We’re still only scratching the surface of artists who can consistently fill the United Supermarkets Arena—acts like Red Hot Chili Peppers or Guns N' Roses, along with some strong country tours. Jumping from that level to a full-on stadium show at Jones is a completely different animal.
So what are the chances? Not zero—but not something you can count on either.
The formula is clear: it takes a rare artist, a unique situation, or a stacked lineup to make it happen. When it does, it feels like an event—because it is.
