Texas Hail Storms: Are You Ready For The Impact?
Texas weather can be brutal and we're in one of the worst seasons.
Texas Hail Season
Talk about well-timed advertising. I heard one of my radio station's sponsors talking about hail repair. They must know their business, because it is certainly "hail season" in Texas. This is the time of the year that you are most likely to experience a hail storm. These storms are, of course, of varying intensities, and even the little-bitty hail storms can do a lot of damage if they hit a target just right.
It's Twice As Bad
Hail season, coincides with tornado season and generally runs March to June. Many Texans might not even be considering the fact that it's hail season because we just experienced one of the weirdest and latest winter storms ever. Yes, you are correct, we are going right from snow to blocks of ice falling from the sky.

The Science Of Hail
Let's learn a little science. Hailstorms are created when rain is blown upward into colder areas of the atmosphere, freezes, then plummets back to earth. But wait, that's not the end of the story. When the hailstorms start returning to earth, they sometimes pick up additional rain/moisture and grow in size.
It's Not Rare In Texas
In my part of West Texas, pea-sized hail is what I would call "the norm". Nickel-sized hail happens quite often, and I wouldn't even call golf ball-sized hail "rare" because it seems to pop up one or more times seasonably. I can also say that I've seen more than a few pictures of hail that is baseball-sized or larger.
Storm Prep
There's not much you can do to prepare for hail expect keep abreast of current weather reports. If you have a garage, you may want to clean out a space for your car because it's that time of the year. Also, don't go out in a hailstorm. You may think you're tough enough to handle the smaller hail, but you have no idea if a clump or a bigger sized piece of hail is on the way.
