It's a beautiful time to be alive in the great state of Texas.

Wanna stay alive? Let's talk. Keep reading. Because there's three things you'll need to avoid if you want to do that.

For the sake of this post, we're going to assume that you're totally healthy and skip things like heart disease, cancer, etc. What we're going to talk about is non-health-related causes of death.

I'm talking about violent and/or tragic ends.

Guns

The Texas rate of firearm deaths is 12.4, slightly higher than the national average of 12.0. In 2017 the CDC reported that over 3500 people in Texas died as a result of firearms.

In fact, nearly 10% of firearm deaths in the entire U.S. happen in Texas (Texas 3513 firearm deaths to the U.S. 39,772 firearm deaths).

Don't make any judgments on this, at least until you read the next item on the list.

Homicide comes in at #2 on our list, with 1653 Texans being murdered. Now here's the twist I alluded to above, our rate of homicide is 5.8 compared to the U.S. at 6.2.

This means there's a lot of validity to the argument, people are going to kill people whether they have a gun or not.

Drugs

Topping out this trio of untimely ends is drugs. Texas actually does really well in this department. Yes, it's sad that we lost 2,989 Texans to overdoses, but our rate is at 10.1, while the U.S. rate is over double that at 21.7 with 70,237 deaths.

It's probably safe to say that most of these overdoses were preventable so you might want to reconsider abusing drugs and/or parcel out your medications very deliberately (it never hurts to pay attention when your doctor or pharmacist is talking to you either).
