Turns out, you’re not imagining things. The Hub City has a few intersections that stand out for being downright hazardous, and I have the numbers back it up.

Lubbock's Loop 289 Tops the List

If you guessed the Loop, congratulations — you win the “least surprising news of the week” trophy! According to accident reports, the Loop 289 and Slide Road intersection is the worst offender, with 139 crashes in 2020 alone. Not far behind were Loop 289 & Quaker Avenue (103 accidents) and Loop 289 & University Avenue (97 accidents).

Basically, if you’re anywhere on the Loop near a major artery, you’re rolling the dice. Add in Milwaukee & 82nd (88 accidents) and the West Loop 289 & Marsha Sharp Freeway exchange (84 accidents), and you’ve got yourself a top five that every Lubbock driver knows all too well.

The Classic Crash Hotspots in the Hub City

But let’s rewind a little. Even before the recent data, Lubbock’s Traffic Engineering Department was flagging intersections as high-risk zones. That list included the eastbound frontage road of the Marsha Sharp Freeway & the northbound frontage of I-27, which had the single highest crash rate in the city. Close behind were 50th & I-27, 34th & West Loop 289, and Fourth & Frankford.

Translation: our busiest thoroughfares have been trouble for years, and not much has changed.

Lubbock Locals Know the Stress Points

If you ask actual drivers (and r/Lubbock on Reddit sure did), folks in Lubbock will tell you about intersections that make their palms sweat on the daily. The North Loop & I-27 earns lots of complaints for confusing stop signs and bridge traffic. University Avenue at both 130th and 114th gets slammed during rush hour, with long queues and frustrated drivers. And don’t even get us started on Broadway & University, where student foot traffic collides with impatient drivers in a claustrophobic nightmare of horns and brake lights.

Outside the City: Even Riskier

It’s not just the city intersections that cause headaches. Out in Lubbock County, where speed limits shoot up to 75 mph, the stakes get much higher. Dangerous merge points include FM 41 & US 87, FM 835 & East US 84, and FM 1585 & US 62/82. Drivers misjudge speeds, visibility can be limited, and the results are often tragic.
