Lubbock’s Surprising Spot On the ‘Adult-Obsessed City’ List

Well, this might be the weirdest badge of honor we’ve earned in a while—Lubbock, Texas has landed near the bottom of a list ranking the 100 most “adult-obsessed” cities in the U.S. That’s right. According to Men’s Health magazine, we’re about as innocent as it gets when it comes to, let’s say... "grown-up entertainment."

How Do the Rankings Work?

The rankings looked at a spicy mix of data, including the number of adult movies purchased, rented, or streamed, the number of adult stores per capita, adult-themed web searches, and how many folks still have Cinemax subscriptions—because we all know why people used to get Cinemax. The #1 most adult-obsessed city? Orlando, Florida. Yep. Orlando beat out Las Vegas—which, frankly, is a little shocking. Rounding out the top five were Vegas, Wilmington (Delaware), Raleigh, and Charlotte (both in North Carolina, apparently the southeast is feeling frisky).

And Then There’s Lubbock

Lubbock landed in the bottom five—only slightly kinkier than Jackson, Mississippi, which was dead last. Joining us in the "least adult" club were Baton Rouge, Winston-Salem, and Charleston, West Virginia.

Now, before we start polishing our halos, let’s get real. While this ranking makes us look squeaky clean, have you noticed how many people around here get picked up for prostitution? It’s honestly kind of nuts. And according to City-Data.com, there are more than 600 registered sex offenders in and around Lubbock—with a resident-to-offender ratio of 421 to 1, which is close to the Texas average. So yeah, not totally pure.

Still, it seems like most Lubbock folks aren’t wasting money on risqué movies or hanging out in sketchy adult shops. Maybe we just prefer the real thing... or maybe we’ve got better things to do!

Whatever the case, Lubbock may not be America’s wildest city—but we’re probably one of the most entertaining.
