On October 9, 2017, police officer Floyd East Jr. was shot and killed on the Texas Tech campus. Today, Hollis Daniels pleaded guilty to the charge of capital murder. But that doesn't mean the trial is over.

Daniels was arrested on the evening of October 9 for being in possession of a controlled substance. Officer East made the arrest and transported Daniels to the Texas Tech Police Department building. According to KAMC, once Daniels was inside the Police Department, he was allowed out of handcuffs, and that is when he was able to access a gun that he had on him.

Once Daniels was inside the Texas Tech Police Department building, Daniels was allowed out of handcuffs long enough to sign documents. Daniels had with him a gun which he was able to steal a few days before his arrest.

He shot and killed East and then ran away. He was captured less than two hours later.

Because Lubbock County Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty, the jury must hear from witnesses and see evidence before they can issue a verdict on the death sentence.

According to KAMC, Hollis Daniels told the Judge in open court that he was responsible to the officer's death.
