Attention Lubbock drivers, prepare for some delays and heavy construction south of the city along the soon-to-be Loop 88.

Progress Report: Lubbock's Loop 88

Loop 88, a 12.4-mile expanse just west of US 84, is the city's response to its growing population. By strengthening the transportation abilities and overall flow of the county, traffic won't feel so congested every day.

Construction for Loop 88 is already underway and was conducted in three separate phases. Here's a map showing where each phase begins and ends. For our purposes, we want to focus on phase 3.

Phase three is where the major construction and delays currently reside. In fact, Avenues U and P will become an all-way stop intersections beginning on Wednesday, October 7.

The roadway from Avenue P to Avenue U will undergo a restriping, converting the stretch of road back to two-way traffic. The ultimate goal is to connect Avenue U to FM 1585 through a Loop 88 frontage road.

The all-way stop at Avenue U and P will allow road crews to safely conduct their work without having to worry about high-speed traffic.

What Drivers Need to Know

All of this construction along phase three of Loop 88 means that drivers should always stay alert and ready for slow-moving construction equipment and service vehicles. They should also expect delays and never be afraid to seek alternate routes.

Drivers also should get comfortable with these delays, as construction on phase 3C isn't expected to be completed until the year 2031.

Check out the Lubbock Loop 88 webpage to keep up with the latest phases, and visit the TxDOT Local News page to see more construction updates that impact your drive.
