Texas Is Eliminating Vehicle Inspections in 2025, But One Required Test Remains For Many Texans
If you hate getting your vehicle inspected, or just find yourself late every year doing so, there is some good news. Those inspections will soon go away.
Starting on January 1, 2025 drivers of non-commercial vehicles in Texas will no longer need to take their vehicle in for an annual inspection in order to get their vehicle registered.
Vehicle Inspections In Texas No Longer Needed in 2025
The Texas Legislature in 2023 passed a law, that is just now getting ready to go into effect, that does away with vehicle inspections. Though drivers will still pay a $7.50 fee that used to be for inspections, not it is called the inspection program replacement fee, funny how that works, right?
But that doesn't mean the end of testing for millions of vehicles in Texas. While Texans will no longer need to get their vehicles inspected, Texans who live in the state's 17 most populated counties will have to get their vehicles tested each year to pass an emissions test.
Emissions Testing in Texas Still Required For Many Texans
In order to register your vehicle in 17, soon to be 18, counties in Texas, your vehicle must still pass an emissions test. The emissions test is not new, but it does mean that millions of Texans will have to have a required test in order to register their vehicle. The 17 largest counties include: Brazoria, Collin, Dallas, Denton, El Paso, Ellis, Fort Bend, Galveston, Harris, Johnson, Kaufman, Montgomery, Parker, Rockwall, Tarrant, Travis and Williamson. And in 2026, that list expands to include Bexar County.
Still A Good Idea To Get Your Vehicle Looked At
While Texans will no longer be required to get their vehicles inspected, there are still many auto shops that will look at your vehicle and give you tips and advice. Experts say it's still a good idea to have a professional look at your vehicle to make sure everything is good.
