Sometimes I don't even understand my brothers and sisters in the Lone Star State.

The people I run across in Texas are generally a good lot. They usually have a good word to say, a pat on the back, and even a hug if you're lucky. They're generally gregarious, loving, and at least display a passing concern about your well-being. I guess this could be said about most of the people in the U.S., but I have I need to show why I find fault with Christmas In Texas.

Texans celebrate Christmas just like anywhere else. There's a large contingent who see it as a Christian holiday and just as many who just love Santa, the season, and all the trimmings. It's not like we're "anti-Christmas" here, and no one seems to let their religion get in the way of the other traditions.

All of the above brings me to my opening question, "Why Are Texans Such Scrooges When It Comes To Christmas Lights"? I have to say that in my hometown, lights are what I'd call few and far between. Yes, we do get some, and some giant inflatables and other markers of the season, but there doesn't seem to be much "buy-in" as a whole.

I recently visited Lakewood, California, and was stunned and delighted to see about every other house, yes, 50% of the houses all lit up for Christmas. It was this kind of community engagement that brought all of this to my attention. These were all pretty decent displays too, and not just a quick string of lights.

So why doesn't Texas go all out with lights? I guess there are some towns/places that do, but it certainly doesn't seem to be trendy in the bigger cities. I think we could certainly do better, if not for ourselves, at least for the kids.

I have to say that all of this inspired me. I'm not much of a Christmas person but I'm going to at least grab up one of those green and red lasers to blast some Christmas-colored dots at the house.  Again, it's NOT TOO LATE. Maybe you don't want to throw roof lights up (I agree, it's a hassle) but let's at least throw some lights over the bushes, or find another way to show a little Christmas Spirit.
