I Finally Tried Kung Fu China Express in Lubbock—Here’s My Honest Review
I have been venturing out a bit more and just came back from a wonderful adventure.
Let's talk about Kung Fu China Express. First off, let me say that they are the worthy successor to Chinese Kitchen, except the food portions are absolutely insane.
So let's get to this unassuming spot in the shopping center that used to be home to Pier One Imports, across from the mall. The place is so low-key that we even tried to use the wrong door to go in, and something tells me we weren't the first people to do it.
This spot is a utilitarian restaurant that is battle-scarred and ready to rock. We're talking dark wood booths, metal bins holding sauces and plasticware, and a place that's all about the food instead of fancy décor. We'll have more on that in a minute.
Come Hungry, Leave With Tomorrow's Lunch
You are greeted by a large cafeteria-style setup where you make your selections and move on down the line. But wait—the first thing they do is ask if you've ever been there before. If you answer "no," they start handing you samples. Not one, not two, but more than a half-dozen. It's nuts, it's amazing, and it's actually very helpful when you're trying to decide what you want.
From there, you grab your selections, decide if you want egg rolls, wontons, and whatnots, then order up a bottled drink or enjoy the self-serve fountain.
It's over in the fountain drink area that you'll find tons of sauces, fortune cookies, and more. You can just go absolutely willy-nilly with chili sauces, Yum Yum sauce, sriracha, soy sauce, and whatever else strikes your fancy.
Now let's get to the portions.
A two-item plate runs about $19.61. Do you think that's pricey? What if I told you that one two-item plate could just about feed a family of four? I'm not kidding. They pack the food into clamshell containers to the point where they can hardly get the lid closed. These aren't generous portions—they're downright ridiculous.

Everything we tried tasted fresh, crispy when it was supposed to be crispy, and very flavorful. The whole experience felt welcoming, from all of those samples at the beginning to walking out with enough leftovers for another meal, or two.
Kung Fu China Express has my heart, and I'm all about it.
