It was about 7:30 a.m., on the day after Christmas, when I saw the first advertisement for legal weed.

I looked up at an electronic billboard at University and Avenue Q just in time to see an ad for a legal dispensary in Texico, New Mexico, advertising that it was just "1.5 hours west". I won't say that my jaw hit the floor, but I did find it very surprising. I even drove back by to see it again.

Man, the times are changing, at least in other states. In Texas, we stay mired in the last remnants of a failed drug war, where politicians who know what's best for you, think you'd be better off in jail, than being high at home playing video games. Someday we're going to look in our rearview mirror and wonder what the hell we were thinking.

What can be said about this though? Lubbock is just as lame, if not lamer than the state of Texas. For decades we thought if we put liquor just past an invisible line (at the strip) that we'd somehow keep alcohol abuse down. We tend to still think that the same invisible line will protect us from strip clubs. It's just a ridiculous situation that closely parallels marijuana prohibition.
