How Bernards Became Lubbock’s Favorite Community Hub
Lubbock, Texas is losing a legendary store.
Lubbock Loses Bernard's
The pandemic then construction were apparently too much for Bernard's according to Everything Lubbock. I would say that the stores days were number the minute that Lubbock went "wet". And that takes us to the beginning of my story.
How We Met
I moved to Union/Brownfield Texas in 1979. It was bleak, and I had no real knowledge of any of the area. For the longest time all I knew was that if we wanted some beer, and Malt Duck for the ladies, we had to go to "Lubbock", to get it. For the longest time I though Bernard's was Lubbock. I seriously didn't know there was a bigger city a few miles up the road.

Why Bernard's?
Bernard's was the first stop for package sales for many of us south of Lubbock. People from Brownfield, Post, Meadow, Tahoka, and many other towns hit up Bernard's because it was close to us than the Strip. Bernard's was good people too. I remember I got carded on my 18th birthday when the drinking age was 18, and on my 19th birthday when the drinking age flipped to 19 (weird coincidence, right?).
Present Day
Apparently the store had become more of convenience store these days, I really couldn't tell you. I can only tell you that they helped us light the fuse on more than a few Friday and Saturday nights and they were very much appreciated. Our goal was always to grab the booze and get back into town to celebrate with our friends, so Bernard's was the go to place. Bye Bernard's, and thank you for all the wonderful years and memories.
