Black Lives Matter Protest Draws Diverse Crowd in Lubbock [VIDEO]
Over 60 people gathered in the rain Tuesday afternoon (August 30) at the Tim Cole Memorial for the first Black Lives Matter protest in Lubbock.
The two-hour event drew both supporters and a handful of detractors, but remained peaceful throughout the evening.
Those supporters who attended the event held signs directed at cars passing on 19th Street and University Avenue. At the beginning of the event, some in the crowd attempted to get chants of "Black Lives Matter" and "No Justice, No Peace" going but the crowd seemed to be more interested in holding signs and talking among each other.
One anti-Black Lives Matter protester held up a sign that read, "Cop Killers Go Home." There were also a handful of drivers who revved their engines in an attempt to drown out the non-existent chants of the protesters. There were also honks of support and disagreement from those driving by.
On a few occasions, some drivers drove close to the curbs in attempts to splash water onto the protesters. Others yelled "all lives matter" from their cars. And one passenger in a truck yelled "white power."
Overall, the event was subdued compared to Black Lives Matter protests that have occurred in other U.S. cities. Organizers of the event said a march could be in the future, but they did not have anything planned yet.
