Rediscovering a Classic Lubbock Restaurant
Sometimes we forget greatness is close by. We take it for granted, chasing newer, shinier objects, and don’t realize that heaven was sitting next door the whole time.
I recently revisited an old friend of a restaurant, and it reminded me how truly awesome it still is.
The Caboose Restaurants Helped Define Dining in Lubbock
I have visited the Caboose Restaurants in Lubbock probably close to a hundred times. Before you think I’m exaggerating, remember that the original Copper Caboose hosted FMX Monday Night Football in it's original location across from Tech. We also used to have beers there before concerts at the Coliseum/Auditorium. On top of that, I also had family members who managed the restaurant.
Despite my history, I had not been back in nearly a decade—and that was a huge mistake on my part.
The Caboose Is More Than Just a Kids Place
There’s a tendency to think of the 50th Street Caboose as a “kids place” because of its incredible game room. That impression overlooks what they really brought to Lubbock: they introduced Tex-Mex in a major way, and they were the very first restaurant to ever serve fajitas in the Hub City.
Value and Flavor That Still Impress in Lubbock
I can tell you firsthand the food is still exceptional. The prices are equally impressive—we fed three people, drinks included, from the lunch menu for $39.05. Thirteen dollars a person is a rare deal these days, especially with portions large enough to take some home.
Clean, Comfortable, and Consistently Excellent
The 50th Street Caboose has been well-maintained, clean, and brightly lit, creating a fun atmosphere for everyone. I even have a “super-spy” who checks restaurant kitchens, and according to them, this place earns two thumbs up for cleanliness. Also, please don't think I'm shading the Copper on Q, I just haven't visited.

A Secret Menu Surprise in Lubbock Dining
The only complaint I walked away with is that I didn’t know about their secret menu sooner. Next time, I definitely want to try the “California Taco". All of this is a great reminder to not forget your old friends because some are still killin' it to this day.
