Since the 'rona hit, I've been a total homebody. One thing I miss a lot is gathering up a crew to go thrifting. I'll have to mask up soon, because Lubbock Habitat ReStore is reopening in a new location soon and you never know what weird and wonderful treasures you might find there.

Perhaps my greatest thrift store score was a Jack Kirby-drawn Galactus t-shirt from the early 1980s. It's the coolest shirt that was ever a shirt. I've also scored plenty of fantastic furniture, jewelry, knick-knacks, dishes, and more over the years. It's fun, inexpensive and the best way to keep perfectly good items out of landfills.

ReStore will have their grand opening at their new location (3630 50th Street) on Friday, November 6th, 2020 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.:

Join Lubbock Habitat as we give thanks to our ReStore shoppers and supporters at our grand opening event! We will have fun fall activities and your name will entered into a drawing to win a turkey!

ReStore is different from other thrift stores in that their items are more upscale, so this is probably a great place to look for like-new items and name brands. They also source overstock items. Those are brand new, just discounted:

Habitat ReStore recycles overstock, discontinued, new and used building materials by manufacturers, stores, contractors and individuals.

And items sold support Lubbock Habitat for Humanity, which builds "simple, decent and affordable" homes for low-to-moderate income families and individuals. You can support this mission by shopping at ReStore, or by volunteering your time and skills. Cash donations help, too, of course.

And if you think you could benefit from Habitat for Humanity's homeownership program, you can apply here.
