Lubbock ISD Board of Trustees to Consider Changing Wilson Middle School to a Magnet Campus
Thursday, November 21st, at 7 a.m., the Lubbock ISD Board of Trustees will meet in a special meeting to discuss, and take action, concerning the future of the Smylie Wilson Middle School campus.
Wilson Middle School has earned an 'F' rating in the Texas Education Agency (TEA) accountability ratings over the past two school years. In 2019, the school's Overall Rating was a 50, and in 2018 the school's Overall Ratings was a 49.
A 2015 state law requires the TEA Commissioner to penalize a school district that has a school that has been failing for more than four consecutive school years. The penalty is either shutting down the individual school, or taking over the entire district.
Lubbock ISD's administration has decided not to wait the four school years to make a potentially drastic change to Wilson Middle School. The district wants to convert Wilson Middle School into a Magnet Campus, and then split the current Wilson Middle School students between the Irons and Mackenzie Middle School campuses.
Lubbock ISD is holding three public meetings to discuss the potential change. The first meeting is tonight, November 12th, 6:30 p.m. at Wilson Middle School. The second meeting is Monday, November 18th, 6:30 p.m. at Mackenzie Middle School, and the third public meeting is Tuesday, November 19th, 6:30 p.m. at Irons Middle School.
Shown below is a letter from Lubbock ISD Board of Trustees President Zach Brady, sent to the Irons Middle School PTA Facebook page:
In order to have the opportunity to share the proposed plan with all three school communities, we have decided to postpone any vote on the two items related to Smylie Wilson until next Thursday. Therefore, the board will convene a special board meeting on Thursday, November 21st at 7:00 am to deliberate on those items.
Prior to that board meeting, the following community meetings have been scheduled:
Smylie Wilson 11/12 6:30
Mackenzie 11/18 6:30
Irons 11/19 6:30I encourage you to attend any of the meetings listed above. The Board will deliberate the S (sic) Wilson issue on 11.21, and no vote on the matter will be taken before that date.“
