What Makes Fun In Lubbock, Texas? A Local’s Perspective

If you’re not from Lubbock, it can be hard to understand what we mean when we say we’re “doing something fun.” That’s okay. This is not for you.

Because in Lubbock, fun is less about activities and more about vibes, convenience, and stubborn loyalty. And once we decide something is fun, we will defend it like we do our favorite Mexican restaurant after they fail a health safety test.

For example, parking lot hangs. Nothing planned. No destination. Just standing around vehicles, talking about nothing important, slowly freezing or overheating, refusing to leave because the conversation is “almost done.” It’s free. It’s casual. It’s sacred.

Then there’s gas station food, which outsiders underestimate at their own risk. Burritos the size of your forearm. Snacks are chosen emotionally. Drinks you didn’t need but absolutely earned. This is not a pit stop, it’s the event.

Another favorite is driving around for no reason. Not to go anywhere. Just to be in the car. Windows up, music loud, thoughts quiet. Sometimes you don’t even get out. You just loop and go home refreshed.

We also consider standing outside an activity. Not participating, just hovering nearby. Watching people arrive. Deciding if we’ll go in. Leaving without explanation. A perfect evening.

And let’s not forget complaining together. About the wind. The weather. The traffic lasted three minutes. Power bills. This is community bonding, and we will not stop.

Is any of this impressive? No. Is it fun? Absolutely. And if you suggest we “do something else,” we will become deeply defensive, because we already are.
