Texas Sales Tax Holiday Is August 7 To 9 And Every Dollar Counts

How are your finances? Could you use a little help? I may have some information—and an opportunity—that you’ll like.

Let’s start with the big one. The 2026 Texas sales tax holiday begins Friday, August 7, and runs through Sunday, August 9.

During that weekend, you won’t pay sales tax on most clothing, shoes, school supplies and backpacks that are priced under $100. That price limit applies to each individual qualifying item, so you could buy several tax-free items as long as each one costs less than $100.

Of course, there are exceptions, so don’t assume that absolutely everything sitting in the back-to-school section qualifies.

A Little Planning Could Save You Even More

In an effort to attract you to their stores during the sales tax holiday, many retailers will also mark down clothing, backpacks and school supplies. It would serve you well to do a little pre-shopping so you know what things normally cost before the sales begin.

That way, you’re not only saving the sales tax—you’re hopefully stacking that savings on top of a legitimate sale price.

It also needs to be made clear that the qualifying items must be purchased during the actual sales tax holiday. Those same clothes, shoes and school supplies will not remain tax-free once the weekend is over.

This is a get-it-then-forget-it type of sale. Either you hammer it out with the other shoppers between August 7 and August 9, or you’re out of luck until next year.

Of course, you’re not really saving money if you’re buying a bunch of unnecessary stuff just because it’s tax-free. Before you start filling up the cart, figure out what your kids actually need.
