Today is Friday, March 20th — officially the first day of Spring. So why does it already feel like Summer in Lubbock?

Blame those mid-90s temperatures. A day like that will trick your brain every time, and the heat isn’t going anywhere just yet. In fact, we’re looking at a few more days of this early-season sizzle before a slight cooldown rolls in on Monday.

Now, if you’ve lived in Lubbock long enough, you know mid-90s doesn’t even count as “hot” yet. For some folks, it’s not officially Summer until we crack triple digits. That raises the big question: when will Lubbock see its first 100-degree day?

Historically, triple-digit temperatures tend to show up around the third week of May. But this year? It feels different. Call it a hunch, call it experience — but it wouldn’t be surprising to see those 100s arrive earlier than usual.

How to Prepare for Early Lubbock Heat

There’s no way to stop the heat, but you can get ahead of it:

  • Get your A/C checked before it’s working overtime

  • Use fans to keep air moving and reduce hot spots

  • Close blinds or shades during peak sunlight hours

  • Stay hydrated throughout the day

  • Wear sunscreen if you’re spending time outside

It may say Spring on the calendar, but in West Texas, Summer doesn’t always wait its turn.
