Have You Noticed Lubbock’s Stunning Sunflower Fields Yet?
🌻 Sunflowers are taking over Lubbock-and I barely noticed.
I'm pretty oblivious, but when did we start having giant fields of sunflowers in Lubbock?
Let's just say I've had a blind spot when it comes to all the sunflowers popping up around here. Sure, I had heard about one location that allows people to take pictures, but I had no clue it was turning into a whole industry.
Despite the fact that I frequently drive from Lubbock to the airport—or out toward New Deal—I never noticed the blooming fields of sunflowers along the way.
I bring this up because the sunflowers are in full bloom right now. A number of farmers have started adopting them as a crop, and from what I’ve seen lately, those fields are thriving.
🌻 A Blossoming Industry Hiding in Plain Sight
Apparently, Lubbock even has a drying plant for sunflower seeds—used for both human and animal consumption. That’s not small-time stuff. If that kind of infrastructure is here in the Hub City, there must be far more sunflower fields around than I ever imagined.

And it's not just about pretty flowers. Sunflowers are a smart crop. They’re drought-resistant, help improve soil health, and attract beneficial insects that support other crops. On top of that, they draw in wildlife, and the fields are frequently used for dove hunting.
So yes—this is me admitting I need to open my eyes a little wider. You’d think the bright yellow fields would stand out more against the sea of white cotton. The next time you’re headed north on I-27, take a glance to the west. There’s a good chance you’ll catch a field of sunflowers in full glory.
