Lubbock, Texas Really Doesn’t Care About Sports Gambling Laws
Lubbock, Texas is going to bet on the Big Game, and you can't stop them.
Legal Betting
I mean no disrespect to the KCBD report that got to the bottom of what is and isn't legal regarding "Squares"* games that are often put together for The Superbowl and other football games. I will say it's always good to know the law, but on the other hand, no one cares and it's not going to stop anyone from playing. For the most part these games are legal to a point, but again, it just doesn't matter.
A Comparison
Sports gambling is a lot like marijuana use in Texas, most residents believe that the State is on the wrong side and therefore the laws are ignored. Threats of prosecution mean nothing to people who believe they are not doing anything wrong. It's just "part of the game" for people who happen to enjoy or partake in these activities. They will continue to take their chances and hope that the police have something better to do.
It Builds Distrust In Government
No one believes they are doing wrong when they bet a friend "a hundred bucks" on the big game, and squares games are actually an easier introduction to gaming than that. It takes no knowledge of sports to place a bet on the last digits of the score landing on your square. Again, these type of things only "hurt" the people involved and in almost all cases are not detrimental to the community. We don't need a nanny-state, or nanny-community solution to these things. Let the grownups have fun.
