We absolutely love the Hub City, but let’s be honest—a break every now and then does wonders. Thankfully, we’re lucky to have some amazing destinations just a road trip away.

Lubbock’s location in the southern center of the U.S. puts a surprising number of fun, drivable spots within reach. Sure, Texas is a massive state, but Lubbock offers decent access to out-of-state adventures without too much hassle.

Enter Travel + Leisure, which recently released its new list of top travel destinations in America. For the first time in over a decade, Charleston, South Carolina has been bumped from the top spot—now sitting at number three. Moving up to number two? The ever-lively New Orleans.

And claiming the coveted #1 spot: Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Readers of Travel + Leisure praised Santa Fe for its near-constant sunshine (over 300 days a year), its rich culinary scene, vibrant arts culture, and—of course—the stunning natural beauty that defines northern New Mexico.

So here’s a thought: why not plan a trip from Lubbock to Santa Fe? Surprisingly, it’s actually closer than Austin and only slightly farther than Dallas/Fort Worth. The drive takes about five hours, making it an easy weekend getaway.
