It’s National Work Zone Awareness Week, and here in the Hub City, it’s a perfect time to talk about something simple that can save lives—slowing down. Let’s be honest, most places in Lubbock are 15 minutes away or less, so easing off the gas in a construction zone isn’t going to wreck your schedule. But not slowing down? That could change someone’s life forever.

Construction crews are out there every day in Lubbock, right up against traffic, working to improve the roads we all depend on. One distracted moment—on a route you’ve driven a thousand times—can turn into a tragedy. We’ve even lost first responders this way, which makes it hit even closer to home.

Real People Are Working Just Feet Away

I’ll admit, there’s always that thought in the back of my mind—what if a worker slips or ends up too close to traffic? That alone is enough reason to stay alert and cautious when passing through work zones.

To highlight the importance of safety, TxDOT launched the “Be Safe. Drive Smart.” campaign, and the numbers back it up: 28,000 crashes and 203 deaths in work zones. That’s not just a statistic—it’s a wake-up call.

And don’t forget—you’re at risk too. Work zones bring unexpected hazards like barrels, lane shifts, and heavy equipment—things that weren’t there the last hundred times you made that drive. Adjust, slow down, and stay sharp.
