It's kind of nice for city officials to invite the public to be a part of reviewing the city's budget, but it is so far from realistic that it's laughable.

I took a quick look at the 2018-2019 budget to see what might be involved in the 2020 budget. It comes in two volumes and is over 800 pages long. Yes, there are a bazillion items that need to be funded and managed, but to even claim that an ordinary person could become a part of this process is ridiculous.

The city council has been working on this budget for the past six months and it will be months before it gets passed or tossed into a dumpster and set on fire. It's my guess that this part of the process is just about making sure whatever YOU like doesn't get defunded.

If you want to be a part of the budget process, then you are invited to the Tuesday City Council meeting and THEN attend the first budget talks the Monday through Wednesday after.
