LUBBOCK, Texas- The Panhandle portion of the state is loaded with remnants from the ice age. Recent road construction on Loop 88 led to an incredible fossil discovery that dates back as far as 2.6 million years.

Is it a dinosaur, or what?

While a crew was conducting an environmental review for Loop 88, they stumbled upon what experts believe is the tooth of a giant ground sloth, a 9-foot-tall, 550-pound creature, ancestor to llamas, foxes, and cats.

Pretty neat, huh?

The National Park Service says there are two different kinds of ground sloths, and the bones found in the construction site are likely remnants of the Shasta Ground Sloth or Nothrotheriops shastensis.

So, what does a Shasta Ground Sloth look like?

You can find a replica of the Shasta Ground Sloth in the video below. It was created using a real set of fossils at the Nevada State Museum. It's MASSIVE! Pretty intimidating.

It's it wild to think about these massive animals roaming around what we know today as Lubbock? Soooo coooooool!

The Museum of Texas Tech University is working with paleontologists to identify and prepare all of the bones found at the site, and they will continue searching for others.

Hope you learned a little something. We're living in sloth country, folks...
