It was a cold morning and the team was bundled in hats, coats and gloves. All at once the colder weather is here and the Santa Land Tree is being built. I was ready for hot chocolate as we watched the team at work and spoke with their Master Electrician, Scott Mc Wright.

It's a three-day project from top to bottom, including all the limbs and lights. When completed, the tree will stand 50 feet to the tip of the star on top. This tremendous centerpiece for what will be the 60th annual Santa Land is brand new this year.

Last year, the tree that had been in place for Santa Land since 2001 collapsed under the weight of our big snowstorm. This year's tree is almost identical but the ornaments are a bit larger, according to McWright.

The team was on their second day of the build and knew what they were doing. McWright said it was, for the most part, the same team that had built the tree in past years.

A tall crane was used to lift the pieces into place and McWright said that by the time the top of the tree is reached it just makes the reach to the top.

Santa Land will be held at Mackenzie Park from December 10-23 and is open to the public free of charge from 6:00-10:00 p.m. nightly. For more information, call 775-2685.
