Lucky Texas Bat Saved From Rain Gauge By Good Samaritans
A lucky little bat got a second chance at life after it was discovered by Derek Vinyard and Eddy McMurtry when they went out to check the rain gauge in a pasture in Shamrock, Texas. It's been raining quite a bit lately, and they figured the gauge would be pretty full.
What they did NOT expect to find was a bat trapped inside, fighting for air.
When they first approached the gauge, they noticed something brown in it. Eddy figured it was probably full of Miller Moths. Derek thought that maybe there was a stick bug in there moving around. To their surprise, it was actually a bat.
They had no idea how long it had been there, but they knew they had to act fast to save its life.
Vinyard told KFMX:
"I ended up getting a stick and tried coaxing it to grab ahold, which it finally did. I put it on top of the post to start drying off while Eddy checked the gauge. Eventually, it flew the wrong way and got stuck behind the truck so I had to coax it back to the stick again. I got some welding gloves and was going to take it to a tree when it lifted off and took flight all on its own, right for the trees. Saved me some walking distance."
They could tell the bat was absolutely exhausted, and the pair is thrilled they were able to find it before it drowned.
Check out the video below of the little bat drying off on the post. Poor guy!
Thank you, Derek and Eddie, for coming to the rescue. You guys really saved the day!
