Judge Sentences Man Who Sold Gun Used in Odessa Mass Shooting

The Lubbock man who sold a firearm used in a 2019 mass shooting in Odessa has been sentenced to two years in federal prison, plus two years of supervised release and a $7,500 fine.

Marcus Anthony Braziel admitted in October 2020 to dealing firearms without a license. While prosecutors have said that not every sale of a firearm needs a federally licensed firearms dealer, if there is a pattern of sales for profit then a license is needed.

KAMC News reports that in August 2019, the mass shooting suspect, whose name we chose to omit here, killed 7 people and injured more than 20 others. The suspect was killed by officers at the scene after they returned fire.

The seven people who were killed in the shooting are:

Leilah Hernandez (15) of Odessa
Edwin Peregrino (25) of Odessa
Mary Granados (29) of Odessa
Kameron Karltess Brown (30) of Brownwood
Raul Garcia (35) of El Paso
Joe Griffith (40) of Odessa
Rodolfo Julio Arco (57) of Odessa

Braziel admitted that he sold the shooter an AR-15-style rifle in October 2016, about three years before the gun was used to commit the mass shooting. Just days after the shooting occurred, federal agents raided Braziel's home in Lubbock.

The court ordered Braziel to surrender himself before 2 p.m. on April 7th, 2021.

The judge noted that Braziel, who works as a respiratory therapist in a medical facility in Brownfield, is needed as a frontline healthcare worker.
