You Can’t Get the Two Best Hamburgers I Ever Had in Lubbock

Yes, I’m going to tease you with hamburgers you cannot get anymore. Don’t worry—this isn’t the end of the story. I promise in the near future I’ll put together a list of hamburgers you can enjoy today. But first, let me tell you about the unforgettable ones that set the standard in my book.

Hamburgers often beat steak when it comes to comfort food cravings

I love a good steak—I can cook a mean medium-rare ribeye that melts in your mouth. Still, if I’m honest, nine times out of ten I’ll choose a hamburger over steak. There’s just something about a perfectly balanced burger that delivers comfort, flavor, and nostalgia all at once.

Lubbock has plenty of great burgers that people rave about

Anyone who’s lived in Lubbock knows the burger scene is strong. Christaki’s is often one of the first names that comes up, and Tommy’s has built a loyal following with its no-nonsense, delicious approach. Among the chains, I’ll never turn down Whataburger, Wendy’s, or even the old “Number Two” mustard burger at Sonic.

The best burger I ever had in Lubbock came from a seafood place

Of all places, the top burger of my life came from Whaler’s Bay, a seafood joint once located at 4th and Frankford. That restaurant is long gone now, but the memory remains vivid. Their burgers were charbroiled to perfection and served on a hearty roll-style bun. To this day, I’m still amazed that the best burger I’ve ever eaten didn’t come from a burger joint at all—it came from a seafood restaurant.

A stuffed cheeseburger made by a friend rivaled the best restaurants

On equal footing with Whaler’s was a creation by my late friend Sausage John. He had a talent for cooking for rock stars, friends, and family alike, so you may have actually have had one. One day he handed me a burger that looked like it was pregnant—it was stuffed with gooey cheese inside. Grilled outdoors at the Amphitheater, that burger was nothing short of unforgettable.

The best hamburgers often depend on timing, memory, and personal taste

Now I turn the question over to you: what’s the best hamburger you’ve ever had? Do you remember it because of the flavor alone, or because it hit at the right time and place? Do some restaurants truly elevate a burger to legendary status, or is it all about the moment you experienced it?

I’d love to hear your answers. Jump over to Facebook, share your most memorable burger story, and I’ll follow this up soon with a guide to the best burgers you can get in Lubbock today.
