The Invention Of Nachos

Ignacio "Nacho" Anaya is credited with creating nachos way back in 1940. They were a meal his just kind of threw together because his cook was missing and he didn't want to keep his customers waiting. The original nachos he made were fried corn tortillas, cheese and sliced jalapeno peppers. So really, the most basic of nachos that are served these days are the exact same ingredients that Nacho himself used.

Nacho Time!

Of course we all know that nachos are way more versatile than that. Heck, Nacho's nachos didn't even have salsa or hot sauce on them and most of us wouldn't consider having nachos without one or the other. Then there's other "regular" ingredients like guacamole, sour cream, taco meat, and pico de gallo, Then we could get downright loopy and add things like black olives, lettuce, and other types of shredded meat.

The Big Question

So let's get back to beans, and specifically refried beans. Do beans belong on nachos? I've heard the "beans in chili" debate a hundred times, but I've never heard anyone debate beans on nachos. When polled, about 9 out of 10 people said, "Yes" refried beans do belong on nachos. So here's the twist: If beans belong on nachos, then why don't they come that way? Very few places serve thier nachos with beans and/or they are treated like an add on.

A Confession

I'll confess, I made nachos last night because this was on my mind. I went with tortilla chips, taco meat, shredded cheese, guacamole, sour cream, salsa...and yes, refried beans. They were messy, but amazing.  Yes, at least in my house, beans belong on nachos.
