This topic came up on the RockShow, and I though I'd go with it a little bit.  Lubbock really doesn't have an identity.  Some people want to try to make Lubbock a "music" destination, but it has not worked before and I don't see any reason why it would now.  Plus, the "music" destination think pretty much puts you in bars and other places where kids are not necessarily welcome.  This got me to thinking about just the opposite, why not make Lubbock a great place for kids?  Read more after the break.

As you can see from the two very different pictures, "Splashpads" can be made on any number of levels.  The picture at the opening of this article is at a Disneyland resort or something.  The one next to this text is a more simple one in Stigler Oklahoma.

Now I love to play the part of mean old bastard, but I think everyone could agree that it we started putting some of these together, even at the rate of one a year, we could eventually some very cool places for little kids to hang out.  You have to also remember that most Lubbock "tourism" is actually people just driving into town to spend the weekend and do some shopping.  I think we'd pick up a lot more "family" money if we offered some type of recreation for kids.

Our current mayor has done an amazing job of not spending Lubbock into a hole.  While other towns are really suffering, Lubbock feels only a pinch.  Every once in a while we need to continue to put some "public works" in to keep the quality of life in Lubbock above and beyond surrounding towns.  We might even be able to sell or lease naming rights to some of these Splash Pads to corporate sponsors to help underwrite the costs. Maybe even some of that Hotel/Motel tax that (in my opinion) is being wasted on whatever they're calling the current "Lubbock Music Fest (ival)" could be used for these projects.

How about we get this done?
