A Hobbs, New Mexico who was on trial for throwing her new bornbaby in a dumpster is now facing the verdict.

19-year-old Alexis Avila's trial started on Tuesday, April 11, in Lea County after being captured on video surveillance camera back on January 7, 2022 disposing of a bag in a dumpster. Six hours later three dumpster divers found an unresponsive newborn baby in the trash bag that Avila had disposed of just prior in near freezing cold temperatures.

KAMC news reported that Avila did testify that she did not remember what happened after she was told she was pregnant on January 6, just a day before giving birth. Along with blacking out Avila's defense team did state that she suffered from multiple disorders which was added to the reasoning for throwing away the baby.

During the trial the jury was shown photographs of that baby boy who had been disposed of by his own mother and was now being raised by his father. The doctor who cared for the new born after he was found said that the baby had many health complications. The baby did have to have a blood transfusion and suffered kidney damage while out in freezing temperatures.

The jury did deliberate for three hours on Friday, April 14, 2023, before finding Avila guilty of Child Abuse resulting in Great Bodily Harm and Attempted First Degree Murder. Avila's jail sentencing is set for May 1 where she is expected to face 12 to 18 years in prison.
