If you're from Texas, you probably weren't raised to announce it to the entire world when things are falling apart. You don't send out a big memo. You'd on't gather everyone around for heartfelt updates about your personal life and problems. You just...get quieter.

When Silence Becomes the Signal

The jokes slow down. The texts take longer to respond to. You still show up, but you do the bare minimum and avoid anything extra at all costs. If someone asks how you're doing, you always give them some version of "I'm fine," even when it's objectively not true...at all.

“I’m Fine” Doesn’t Mean What You Think It Means

In Texas, struggling is treated like something you're supposed to handle privately. You're supposed to pick yourself up by your own bootstraps and figure it out yourself. Above all else, you're not supposed to burden anyone else around you. Silence quickly becomes a coping mechanism, and it's not because you don't trust your friends and family to have your back; it's because this was how you were taught to manage the hard times in life.

Why Texans Handle Hard Things Privately

The irony is that Texans are incredibly observant. They pick up on things when they aren't quite right. Texans clock the change in the tone immediately, but unfortunately, they don't always know what to do with it, because checking in too directly with someone can also feel intrusive. Instead, we show support in other ways, like offering a meal or inviting someone to hang out when we feel like they might be going through it.

The Quiet Ways Texans Show Up for Each Other

Getting quieter isn't a weakness in Texas. It's truly survival mode. But it doesn't have to be this way. Just know that if you are struggling right now, you aren't alone, and people do want to know. They care about you. They want to help you. You know how I know? I've been there. I've had hard conversations with friends over the years, and I've had friends show up, show out, and pull me out of holes I didn't think I'd even get out of.

Getting Quieter Isn’t Weakness — It’s Survival

If you're going through a rough patch, especially during this holiday season, I just want to encourage you to talk to a friend, a pastor, a doctor, or even your HR at work. Talk to someone. Find someone who has some resources, whether financial, mental, or otherwise, to help you make it to the next season in life.

The squeaky wheel gets the oil, so make a little noise, even if it's uncomfortable. It will pass. We just can't lose you to the hustle and bustle of life. You matter.
