Texas Woman Sentenced For Scamming Over $100m From US Army
57-year-old San Antonio Native Janet Mello scammed the United States Army out of over $100 million in one of the largest cases of fraud they've ever encountered, and will now be spending the next 15 years behind bars as a result.
The former financial manager at Fort Sam Houston turned con artist lived a lavish lifestyle, boasting 82 supercars, multiple mansions, designer brands, and utter extravagance until she was caught creating a fake organization to apply for military program grants...which were the very same grants she was in charge of approving and allocating funds to.
What's worse, the fake organization she invented was called "Child Health and Youth Lifelong Development", and convinced others the funds were going toward helping take care of military children across the globe.
Mello was so bold and impulsive with the stolen grant money, that DailyMail reported she spent $923,000 on jewelry within 24 hours in 2022.
Her 6-year run has finally come to a close.
Luckily, she saved many of the most expensive items and her defense attorney says she hopes they can be sold to assist in reimbursing the government for her wrongdoing.
Greed is a crazy thing, man. It makes people behave like animals.
Here's to hoping she enjoys her prison scrubs, fashioning eyeshadow out of instant coffee, and fighting over the hot plate with other prisoners to cook her bags of ramen. Bye, girl, bye!
