Tragic Pattern: Four Harris County Deputies Take Own Lives in Six Weeks
The Harris County Sheriff's Office is left mourning the loss of its 4th deputy to suicide in less than 6 weeks, a stark reminder of the trauma law enforcement is subjected to daily across the state.
Harris County Deputies Long Nguyen, William Bozeman, Maria Vasquez, and Christina Kohloer all took their lives, something the president of the Harris County Deputies Organization says has left them all in shock, "One is too many. Two? Three? Yes, it's devastating."
Suicide Statistics Among Texas Police Officers on the Rise
President of the Houston Police Officers' Union, Douglas Griffith, says suicide risks are 54% higher for those who work in law enforcement. The average person doesn't see anywhere near the kind of devastation an officer sees on a day-to-day basis.
Unfortunately, the profession takes a toll on your mental health.
Dr. Thomas McNeese, Director of the Harris County Sheriff's Office of Behavioral Health, hopes the number of losses within such a short timespan will spark a conversation and help break the stigma surrounding seeking help from a professional.
