How Can There Be A New Holiday?

The idea that we can't have "new" holidays is dead wrong. First, a "holiday" doesn't mean that we get the day off and that banks close. Sometimes a holiday is just a nice commemoration of a little event. I think each generation and people in general should decide what is important to them and what they want to celebrate.

The Best Holidays Mutate

Most holidays out there started as something else. I don't think it's any news that Christmas used to be Yule. The history of Easter is much more convoluted but again, it didn't start as "Easter". Right now Columbus Day appears to be mutating into "Indigenous People's Day" and/or disappearing completely.

This Holiday Is A Mash Up

The new trending Halloween is "Valloween". As you can imagine it's a combination of St. Valentine's Day and Halloween. It's best described as a day for people who can't get enough Halloween and also a special day for spooky couples ala Gomez and Morticia Addams.

I'm All About It

Most holidays do have an underlying bit of darkness (I'll let you examine that yourself) with Valentine's being no exception. As you may or may not know, St. Valentine was beaten and beheaded. If you'd like to go a bit darker, a skull alleged to be his is actually on display in Rome (How romantic!). So why not add that Halloween twist to the day? Why not let the spooky couples bring a little creepiness into a holiday with such dark beginnings? Even better, why not open up the holiday for those people who find Valentine's a bit cheesy and/or are single?
