Will Lubbock Have Six More Weeks Of Winter?
Lubbock just survived one heck of a winter blast, and honestly, I’m still driving past parking lots stacked with grungy snow piles tall enough to qualify as new West Texas landmarks. It’s a reminder that the storm wasn’t just a flurry — it was a full-on “every man for himself” shopping spree that wiped out store shelves and made all of us behave like we’ve never seen frozen water before. Classic Lubbock.
Is Lubbock in for Round Two of Winter? Don’t Put Away the Gloves Yet
So the obvious question is: are we done, or is winter gearing up for an encore?
For that, tradition says we turn to Punxsutawney Phil — the furry meteorologist with a fan club. According to the handlers in charge of Phil’s big moment, we’re looking at six more weeks of winter. I’d defer to local up-and-coming rodent forecaster “Prairie Dog Pete,” but he’s still a rookie and probably hasn’t even hired a publicist yet.
But here’s the thing about Phil: he’s only accurate about 35% of the time. You could flip a tortilla off the Jones Stadium press box and do better. And even if he is right, what does “six more weeks of winter” really mean for us? Most of our winter has been mild — annoyingly cold one day, patio-ready the next. Are we getting more mild or more wild?
For a somewhat respected long-range source, we turn to the Old Farmer's Almanac. Their outlook shows mild temperatures ahead with increasing chances of rain toward the end of the month. March follows with a few showers and more temperatures hovering around 60. Not exactly “snowpocalypse,” but not exactly “springtime bliss,” either.

In short, winter probably isn’t done with us — but it’s looking more like a polite goodbye hug than a surprise roundhouse kick. Still, keep the gloves handy. This is Lubbock. Anything can happen.
