You might think that it's the seven trumpets being blown to signal the end of time, but it's only a test of our tornado sirens.

Where We're At

The Lubbock Tornado Sirens have been in place since February of 2022. That's a pretty reasonable time to judge their effectiveness. All I can really say is...I've never heard them. I'm not sure how often they are tested or have gone off for real, but as far as I know they're a myth to cover the cost of donut expenditures in the city budget.

Testing, 1, 2, 3

The tornado sirens will be tested at 9:30 Friday morning. It's almost "no fair" to let you know when they're going off, the true way to judge their effectiveness is if you hear them go off and wonder what the heck is going on. Then again, you could be like me and somehow deaf to this outdated technology and never take notice.

Better Technology

It still seems to me the most effective way to warn people of inclement or dangerous weather is via their phone on apps that allow you to opt in or opt out. Then again, I opted out of Amber and other alerts after I felt that they've stretched their original intentions way too far. The point of the whole thing should be that you be able to be warned if you want to be warned and left alone if you don't.

Pole Dancing

Call me a conspiracy theorist, but the whole thing seems like it was put together by people who own towers so they can pick up a rental check from the city. I know that's a wild theory, but I can't see the justification for them otherwise. Anyways, if you hear Gabriel's horn, it's probably just a test of the Lubbock tornado sirens.

Most Remaining Casa Ole Locations In Texas, Here's Where To Find Them

Back in its heyday, it seems like most Texas towns were saying, "Fresh Today! Casa Ole!" However, it appears that only 16 Casa Oles are still in operation, and 15 of those are in Texas.
