I was lucky enough to spend real time with Brad Arnold of 3 Doors Down, and most of those conversations will stay exactly where they belong — in my heart, with my family, and between me and Brad. What I can say publicly is simple: this was a special human being. Brad lived his truth, lived his music, and carried himself with a genuine heart of gold.

Brad Arnolds Wasn't Just A Rock Star, He Was a Friend To All

One memory still makes me laugh. During an FMX show at the Lone Star Amphitheater here in Lubbock, Brad had me and Guapo rolling as he talked about how much he loved cutting the grass on his property in nothing but his boxer shorts — until, as he put it, “the damn ticks ate me up.” That was Brad: grounded, hilarious, and completely himself, even while fronting one of the biggest rock bands in the world.

3 Doors Down Is More Than Just a Rock Band

FMX was connected to 3 Doors Down through the band’s Better Life Foundation, and that’s where a lot of people don’t know the full story. While some rock stars talk about giving back, 3 Doors Down actually built something real. The foundation focused on helping kids in need of food, shelter, and medical assistance, and it played a meaningful role in Hurricane Katrina relief efforts when people needed help the most.

Over the years, many of the tour jackets I collected were donated to the foundation and auctioned to raise money. And 3 Doors Down wasn’t alone. Artists like Shinedown, Skynyrd, and Seether stepped up, too. This band didn’t just write songs — they created a vehicle for real change and consistently went above and beyond.

For some, 3 Doors Down begins and ends with “Kryptonite.” Others can add “Loser” and “When I’m Gone.” But the deeper fans know this band released 29 singles, and for me personally, my favorite Christmas song of all time will always be “Where My Christmas Lives.”

The thought of Brad leaving this world someday creates a bigger hole than many people realize. If you’re a fan — past or present — maybe buy a few extra school supplies or quietly pick up the tab for a kid’s lunch. I know that would’ve made Brad smile.

If you read this in time, we'll have a special tribute to Brad coming up around 8:50 this morning on FMX.

And yes, my name appears in the album credits of 3 Doors Down’s 2008 release. I don’t mention that for myself, but to show you exactly what kind of band this was — grateful, generous, and never forgetting the people who helped along the way. I would also reccomend that you check out this video by Brent Smith of Shinedown:
