BUSTED: The Top 5 Crimes People Get Arrested For in Texas
According to the FBI, the state of Texas has one of the highest crime rates in the entire United States. For some reason, our state's harsh jail sentences haven't done much to sway people from their bad behavior.
Let's take a look at the top 5 crimes in Texas in 2023 and what kind of punishment they might come with.
1. Assault
Causing bodily injury to someone whether intentionally or recklessly, is defined as assault. In Texas, you could spend up to 99 years in prison for assault, depending on what you've done.
2. Possession of Marijuana
Lots of other states have legalized weed, but Texas just hasn't gotten there yet. Possessing less than 2 ounces in Texas will get you a misdemeanor, put to 180 days in jail, and a $2000 fine. If you are caught with more than 4 ounces of marijuana, you could get a felony and spend up to 99 years in prison AND be fined up to $50,000.
3. DUI
Driving under the influence is a major problem in Texas. It's illegal to operate a vehicle if your blood alcohol content level is .08% or higher. If you're caught driving drunk in Texas, even if it's your first offense, you could still spend up to 180 days in jail, be fined $2000, and have your license suspended for a year.
4. Burglary
If you enter someone's home or building with the intent to steal, you could land yourself in prison for anywhere from 180 days to the rest of your life.
5. Sexual Assault
Rape, indecent exposure, child molestation, and other similar criminal acts are considered sexual assault. If you're charged with sexual assault in Texas, you could get up to 20 years in prison, and fined up to $10,000
