I'm not typically one to hype the possibility of severe weather, but after the beating Lubbock and surrounding areas took from hail up to 3" in diameter last week and the conditions that I know exist today I'm making an exception.

Areas in Garza County and Lynn County are already seeing Severe Thunderstorm warnings as well as Castro, Swisher and Lamb counties as storms are already developing across the South Plains and in order to avoid getting caught off guard, NOW is the time to act.

The National Weather Service Lubbock office has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for much of the South Plains, including Lubbock until 10PM on Saturday, May 23rd.

The primary threats from these storms will be:

  • Hail up to 3" in diameter

  • Damaging wind speeds with gusts up to 70mph

  • Frequent cloud to ground lightning

  • 2% Tornado possibility

Take shelter if you hear thunder or see lightning.  It is strongly encouraged to get your vehicle under a space to prevent hail damage if possible. Secure outdoor furniture or other items that may become airborne with strong gusty wind.

Stay weather aware by tuning in to your preferred weather professionals.
