If you listen to The RockShow, you probably already know that I'm not a big sports fan at all. In fact, most of the time, I'd rather eat glass than watch a game. I do, however, have a soft spot for hockey and watching people beat each other up with big sticks while wearing ice skates. That brings me to today's subject: the Lubbock Cotton Kings.

We lost our hockey team back in 2007 when the team failed to come to an agreement with the City of Lubbock on using the City Bank Coliseum for their games. It was short-lived fun for kids like me, but I remember being pretty sad I wouldn't get to go to hockey games anymore with my mom's cool friend that had season tickets.

Growing up in this dusty town, it was really exciting when they played their first game back in 1999. I remember everyone chatting about it at school. When we started going to the games, the fights on ice would tear the crowd apart. Everyone hollered and cheered like they were only there for instances such as these, and the Cotton Kings did not disappoint; there was always a little blood on the ice at the end of the game.

It's beyond me whether or not the team was actually good, but I do remember them winning some games, and having some die-hard fans.

It's a shame we don't have a team anymore. My friends and I also took figure skating lessons at the City Bank Coliseum. When the team didn't return to play again in 2008, the ice skating lessons ended shortly after. It was a sad day. I was just figuring out how to stand up without falling. The coliseum itself was eventually demolished in 2019.
