Why Your Lubbock Property Taxes Are Going Up
Let's start with the bad news, Lubbock: Yes, our taxes are about to increase. The good news? We asked for it. Literally, voters approved a tax increase, so let's break down what this entails.
What Is the Proposed Tax Rate?
The City of Lubbock proposed a rate of $0.513421 per $100 valuation. Keep in mind that the no-new-revenue tax rate is $0.475154 per $100.
The no-new-revenue rate is the tax rate for the 2026 tax year that will raise the same amount of property tax revenue for the city from the same properties in both 2025 and 2026, according to the City of Lubbock website.
Unless the city wants to hold an election to seek voter approval of a new rate, the voter-approval rate of $0.513447 per $100 is the highest tax rate that the city may adopt.
How Do I Calculate My Property Tax Amount?
Great question, and who doesn't like math? The formula for finding out how much you owe in taxes under these rates is this:
(tax rate) x (taxable value of your property)/100 = property tax amount
Details on the Public Hearing
The City of Lubbock will be hosting a public hearing on the proposed tax rate on September 1 at Citizens Tower on Avenue K. The hearing starts at 6 p.m.
Because the proposed tax rate is less than the voter-approval tax rate, citizens cannot accept or reject the proposed rate. Instead, they can voice their concerns to city lawmakers and attend public hearings like the one on September 1.
If you have any questions regarding your property taxes or calculating the value of your property, you can call Lubbock's tax assessor, Tim Radloff, at (806) 762-5000. You can also send an email to info@lubbockcad.org.
