Lubbock Ranks Near Bottom For Summer Jobs In New Survey
If you're a young person trying to get a job in Lubbock, then I have some very bad news.
I had any number of "summer jobs" growing up — from working at an amusement park, to lifeguarding, to flipping burgers behind the grill at Dairy Queen. Back then, you could pretty much walk into any business and find some kind of entry-level position if you were willing to work.
Finding A Summer Job In Lubbock May Be Tougher Than Ever
It's certainly not like that now — or at least not here in Lubbock.
WalletHub’s new “Best Places for Summer Jobs” rankings placed Lubbock at a disappointing 171st out of 182 cities nationwide. That’s not just bad — that’s hanging around the bottom of the barrel territory.
WalletHub looked at 21 different factors tied to summer employment, including job availability, internships, wages, commute times, affordability, and even fun activities outside of work. The results for Lubbock were rough pretty much across the board.
If you’re a young person hoping to cash in on a summer job this year, the numbers suggest you may have a tougher time in the Hub City than in most places across America.
Let's just say your chances are somewhere between bad and stink-o.
Other Texas Cities Crushed Lubbock In The Rankings
This isn't just a "Texas thing" either. Plenty of Texas cities performed extremely well — not just statewide, but nationally.
Plano ranked 16th overall in America. Austin came in at 36th, while San Antonio landed at 70th. Even Amarillo significantly outperformed Lubbock, finishing at 101st overall.
For a city anchored by Texas Tech University and positive population growth, this is honestly a pretty frustrating and perplexing outcome.
The Survey Says Lubbock Struggles In Multiple Areas
According to the study, Lubbock struggled not only with job opportunities, but also in categories tied to affordability and social environment for younger workers.
That means the city didn’t just have trouble scoring well on employment itself — it also lagged behind in areas that make a place attractive and livable for younger people trying to earn money during the summer.
And honestly, that may be the bigger issue long term.
