Kliff Kingsbury Is Out as Head Coach at Texas Tech Football
Texas Tech University has officially confirmed that Kliff Kingsbury will not return as head coach in 2019.
"I'd like to thank Kliff Kingsbury for his six years of dedication leading our football program," said Texas Tech Athletics Director Kirby Hocutt in a statement. "He's worked very hard and represented us in a first-class manner."
"For what he achieved and contributed to Texas Tech, as an athlete, a student and our football coach, Kliff Kingsbury has a special place in the hearts of Red Raiders," Texas Tech President Dr. Lawrence Schovanec said. "As a coach, he was a model of class and character, and he always put the best interests of his student-athletes first. I admire and appreciate all he has done for Texas Tech."
Lubbock Avalanche-Journal sports reporter Don Williams was the first to break the news Sunday morning, citing an unnamed source. A local television station, citing a source on the team, made the same announcement. 1340 The Fan nor its sister station News/Talk 95.1 & 790 KFYO have independently confirmed this news.
A press conference with Texas Tech Athletic Director Kirby Hocutt is scheduled for this afternoon at 2 p.m. to discuss "the future of the Red Raider football program." It's expected that Hocutt will make the news official at that time.
Kingsbury's all-time record after six seasons as the head coach stands at 35-40 after the loss to Baylor. The Bears' win earned them a bowl game and the Texas Farm Bureau Shootout trophy. The Red Raiders finished the season losing five straight after jumping to a 5-2 start.
Kingbsury never did better than 2-3 to finish a season, and never notched a winning record in Big 12 play. The firing is not a surprise, but the personal nature of Kingsbury and his history does make the news sting a little more than if it was anyone else suffering the same fate.
Kirby Hocutt now turns his focus to hiring the next head coach for the Red Raiders.
