Lubbock, what are you doing to yourself right now?

I know now is a bad time to hit you up on your health. You're probably still digesting nachos and beer from Sunday's Big Game blowouts. It's not just that, you were probably inhaling mesquite and other smoke for the better part of the day, too. Let's face it, you're probably not healthy.

A recent Wallethub survey seems to confirm Lubbock's place as an unhealthy city, coming in at 173 out of 182 towns listed.  Here's the long and short of it from Wallethub:

Health in Lubbock (1=Healthiest; 91=Avg.):

  • 105th – Cost of Medical Visit
  • 176th – Mental-Health Counselors per Capita
  • 57th – Healthy Restaurants per Capita
  • 165th – Dietitians & Nutritionists per Capita
  • 61st – Avg. Cost of Fitness-Club Membership
  • 102nd – Share of Physically Active Adults
  • 71st – Running Trails per Capita
  • 170th – Avg. COVID-19 Cases in the Past Week per Capita

It sure looks like things were driven down by our COVID-19 cases, but we weren't exactly shining when it comes to mental health or nutrition either. These numbers don't surprise me. What actually surprises me is that we scored so well in "running trails per capita." I'm pretty sure you could threaten me with jumper cables on my nipples and I couldn't name a single running trail around here.

I also understand that Wallethub posts are meant to be provocative, but they seem to come by their conclusions honestly. Maybe it's time to have a salad and a lite job, Lubbock.
