Lubbock Is Getting A Location Of Popular Chicago Food Chain
It appears that Lubbock is getting a popular Chicago-style restaurant, according to Everything Lubbock, who discovered a permit for the eatery registered on 10/21/2024.
Portillo's, which specializes in Chicago-style hot dogs, beef and sausage sandwiches, and burgers, will be located on, "the northeast corner of Marsha Sharp Freeway and Milwaukee Avenue."
Construction for the project is slated to begin in February of next year.
This will not be the only Portillo's in Texas (there are quite a few in Dallas/ Ft. Worth and Houston) but it will be the only Portillo's for hundreds of miles.
Here's the map of the current Portillo's locations:
As you can see, there's a huge Portillo's void in the middle of the U.S., and it appears that Lubbock will be the town that breaks up the gap.
Portillo's was founded in Illinois in 1963, according to the Portillo's wiki. It was originally called a food trailer called"The Dog House" but is now named after founder Dick Portillo. There are nearly 50 locations in the Chicago metropolitan area.
Portillo's menu is enticing- I love Chicago dogs but I'm not sure I've ever actually had a "proper" one that Chicagoans would consider worthy of the name.
Portillo's is made with, "mustard, relish, celery salt, freshly chopped onions, sliced red ripe tomatoes, kosher pickle, and sport peppers piled onto a steamed poppy seed bun." Yum.
Portillo's also has chili dogs (makes me wonder if the chili is also Chicago style, with a touch of cinnamon), Garden dogs, and Polish sausages on a bun.
Also on the menu are Italian Beef, Big Beef, Beef and Cheddar and Italian sausage sandwiches. Beefy!
There are also chicken sandwiches, burgers, and salads if you're looking for something a little more familiar. There is also an interesting pasta menu with choices I've never heard of before. What's a Mostaccioli? I can't wait to find out.
Welcome to Lubbock Portillo's!
