I think Lubbock’s preparedness for legal weed is a very valid question—and one that’s coming up more often as attitudes shift across the country.

Lubbock is an interesting place. I wouldn’t say we have as many smoke shops as churches, but they’re definitely closing the gap. And let’s be honest—most people know what those shops are really catering to. It’s not just snacks and sodas.

Nationally, about 87% of Americans believe marijuana should be legal in some form. That number might be lower here locally, but it’s hard to imagine it’s not at least approaching a majority. Public opinion is clearly moving, and at some point, policy tends to follow. The debate isn’t really if things will change—it’s when, and how ready communities like Lubbock will be when they do.

⚖️ From Prohibition to Public Policy

It’s worth considering how prohibition affects more than just access. For some, marijuana laws have contributed to distrust—not just between citizens and lawmakers, but also between communities and law enforcement, who are simply tasked with enforcing existing laws. That tension doesn’t just disappear overnight, but it does raise questions about whether current policies still reflect modern views.

Travel to places like California or Las Vegas, and you’ll see a very different reality. Legal cannabis there isn’t chaotic or overwhelming—it’s structured, regulated, and often surprisingly low-key. Dispensaries aren’t the wild scenes some imagine; they’re typically quiet, professional storefronts. For many communities, legalization hasn’t dramatically changed daily life—it’s just shifted something from the underground into a regulated space.

At some point, conversations like this tend to come full circle. Policies evolve, perspectives shift, and communities look back on earlier approaches with a different lens. Whether Lubbock is ready now or not, it’s a discussion that isn’t going away anytime soon.
