Merging Confuses Lubbock—But It Shouldn’t
Merging in Lubbock seems to be a struggle for some drivers—but it really doesn’t have to be.
I had a bit of a close call on Sunday in Lubbock that made me think about just how many people misunderstand the basics. If this were NASCAR, they might have called it “trading paint.” I call it something else: being an inconsiderate jerk.
️ Two Lanes Becoming One: A Common Scenario
In this particular situation, two lanes were merging into one due to construction—something we're seeing more and more of around the Hub City lately. It's frustrating, sure, but not exactly rare.
And yet, some drivers still seem shocked every time it happens.
The Golden Rule of Merging: Be Aware, Not Aggressive
Here’s the thing: dealing with a lane closure is no different than a normal merge onto a road or highway. Yes, the driver already on the road technically has the right of way—but being "right" doesn't protect you from a crash.
It’s better to be safe than be right—and way better than being in an accident.
⚠️ You’ve Got Options—Use Them Wisely
When merging, you’ve basically got three choices:
Move over safely
Speed up slightly to blend in
Slow down just a bit to make space
There’s also a fourth option that far too many Lubbock drivers seem to choose: keep your head down and pretend you don’t see the other car.
Please don’t be that driver.
What Happened to Me Could’ve Gone Bad
In my close call, the driver to my left completely ignored the narrowing road—and for about three seconds, there were three cars in two lanes. I don’t know how we avoided contact.
I kept thinking afterward: what was the point? Nobody’s saving any real time by acting oblivious or aggressive. All that recklessness could have led to a three-car wreck—for what? A 10-second head start?
Merging Is About Consideration
The road is a shared space. Merging is one of those moments where we can either look out for each other—or pretend like no one else exists.
Just a little awareness and courtesy goes a long way. When lanes reduce, so should the attitude. Let’s all do better.
