Lubbock’s Best Bygone Restaurant Teases Something New
I know I wasn't alone in letting out an audible gasp when I saw a post from Crafthouse on Facebook this weekend. Why would a restaurant that's been closed since 2022 be posting on social media?
Out of every restaurant the pandemic ultimately claimed, Crafthouse hurt the worst for me for several reasons.
For one, my darling worked there during the worst of COVID-19, and I would not have been able to make ends meet if not for Crafthouse's agile shift to to-go orders and the generous patrons that tipped like crazy, even as they just drove up and left.
Seriously, if you were one of those people, I owe you my gratitude forever. Thank you.
Less personally, and I'm sure many of you will agree, it was a major loss of a Lubbock orginal- a place that shined as a beautiful blend of our food culture in this area.
From Mexican pozole to German pretzels, it highlighted the best of who we are- and each dish was expertly and lovingly prepared. All paired with local and regional brews and wines. Yum.
And, oh-my-goodness, the donuts. The best donuts in the whole wide world.
Tantalizingly limited with rotating flavors- even though my husband worked there I still went online to reserve my precious pastries: Butterbeer, Millionaire's Pie, Chocolate Covered Cherry, etc. Pure perfection.
After Crafthouse closed, owner-chefs Kate and Jason never stopped feeding Lubbock- they both moved on to other restaurants here in Lubbock. And while I enjoyed the food they had at those places, it still wasn't our Crafthouse. Our very special place.
So imagine my joy, our joy, when this was posted this past weekend:
Is it cryptic? Why yes. Does it confirm anything in particular? Well, no. But seeing Kate and Jason holding hands with the promise of updates is good enough for me!
This might not be the return of Crafthouse per se, but I do hope and believe it is the return of the things we loved about Crafthouse- and please, please, please let those donuts come back!
